Portavadie Marina Waste Case Study
Portavadie Marina provides harbour facilities, restaurant and accommodation to visitors and staff, the site also includes full marine servicing and high quality self-catering properties. Synergie Environ were commissioned by Highlands and Islands Enterprise to conduct a detailed assessment of waste production at Portavadie Marina. A detailed site survey was carried out in partnership with Portavadie Marina’s staff, to investigate and identify cost savings and to identify opportunities to improve waste management.
Key findings of the waste report included opportunities to reduce waste production at source, particularly of key ingredients. This could be achieved through a variety of means including improved stock control, rotation and chilled storage. Further savings could be realised through improved segregation of recyclable wastes by the provision of more small containers for the temporary storage of recyclable materials prior to its disposal in bulk recycling containers. In total, the project identified total potential cost savings of between about £8,400 and £25,000 per annum.
The associated potential environmental benefits included waste tonnage savings of over 5 tonnes per annum. Since completing the project Portavadie Marina has subsequently adopted and implemented many of the review recommendations to reduce waste production at source which have included improved stock control and chilled storage facilities.
