Ardagh Group Case Study

The Ardagh Group has a major glass bottle producing site in Irvine, North Ayrshire. This produces a range of glass bottles, most of which are supplied to the distillery trade and some of the world’s biggest brands across every sector including, beers, foods, wines, soft drinks, spirits and pharmaceuticals. Synergie Environ Ltd was commissioned by Scottish Enterprise to carry out a study to provide recommendations to improve water management methods at Ardagh Glass. A detailed site survey was carried out in partnership with staff at Ardagh Glass, to identify opportunities to increase water efficiency at the site.

The review identified total potential cost savings of over £8,500 per annum the implementation of which would reduce water consumption by over 600m3 per annum. Further development will clearly offer potential for substantial additional savings.

The review identified recommendations which included a review of water billing at the site to reflect the current use and occupation, supporting the continued development and application of the SCADA linked water sub-metering system and using outputs from this system to monitor and report improvements in water efficiency at the site. In addition the opportunities for increased recycling of process water and rainwater harvesting were assessed.
