Young's Seafood Case Study
Synergie was commissioned by Zero Waste Scotland to carry out a Confidential Packaging and Waste Prevention Review at Young’s Seafoods’ Peterhead fish filleting, smoking and packaging plant. The site incorporates two interconnected (filleting / smoking and packing) production lines. A detailed site survey was carried out in partnership with Young’s staff, to investigate and identify potential areas to improve resource efficiency and reduce packaging use.
The survey was supported by the collation and analysis of extensive billing and production data to identify key SKU’s and substantiate specific recommendations for improvement. Key findings included opportunities to reduce packaging use and costs by re-designing primary packs and reviewing secondary packaging specifications, and opportunities to improve waste segregation and increase revenues from recycling. In total, the review identified total potential cost savings of over £28,000 per annum.
The associated potential environmental benefits included material savings of over 65 tonnes and carbon savings of over 35 tonnes per annum. The company has subsequently adopted and implemented many of the review recommendations through an overall site Environmental Management Programme and is seeking to repeat this project at its other process sites to help realise further savings thoughout its operations.
